Grounding… We all tend to spend a lot of time in our head, in our mind, we analyse what’s going on all the time, we worry about the future, get stuck in the past or simply lose ourselves in our thoughts.
All this time spent in the mind creates tension, stress, a feeling of instability and insecurity in our lives. This is exactly the moment where we need grounding, to be present in the Now and in our bodies. When you ground yourself you get back your peace of mind, your self-confidence, inner peace and strength.
But how do you ground yourself?
There are various techniques out there for this:
– Walk barefoot on the ground,
– Lie on the ground (without mats or similar between you),
– Submerge in natural water (lakes, sea, river, …)
– Earthing equipment
– Essential oils.
Grounding… has something to do with connecting with earth, to establish ground contact, so to speak. By “earthing” we mean activities that reconnect you to the earth. There are more and more studies on this topic, which show how important grounding is not only for our physical, but also for our emotional, mental and spiritual health.
Grounding means, that you align your electrical energy with yourself again by connecting to the earth. Grounding is of course best done outdoors in the great outdoors, but there are also ways to do this at home, not all of us can regularly spend time outdoors in nature.
If you are lucky enough to be able to go outside, you can ground yourself by touching the ground with the soles of your feet and palms of your hands, or ideally with your whole body. Walk barefoot in the grass or through the woods, lie in the sand, on the meadow or in the moss, go swimming and bathing in open waters like lakes, in the sea or in rivers.
If you spend a lot of time indoors, especially in the cold winter, you can use your essential oils, among other things, to ground yourself.
My 8 favourite essential oils for grounding
Vetiver
Vetiver is an emotionally grounding, soothing essential oil that brings you back to yourself and into connection with Mother Earth – with the very first breath.

Vetiver reminds you that everything in life follows a cycle, and the best way to avoid getting under the waves of life is to ride them. This means following the cycles rather than resisting them. Give yourself to the cycles of life, use them for you, because if you resist, they will use force.
Application:
- Apply a drop of vetiver to your left hand – rub with your right hand and then put your hands in front of your nose. Take 1-2 minutes to absorb the fragrance. What does it do to you? What can you do with him?
- Take 2 drops of vetiver and rub them on both soles of your feet. Leave your hands on the soles of your feet for another 1-2 minutes and feel how you are connected to Mother Earth.
- Apply 1-3 drops of vetiver to your coccyx and rub the whole spine from neck to coccyx. Feel how you are solidly grounded and at the same time connected to Mother Earth.

Ginger
Ginger is an energizing and warming essential oil. Did you know that women in Senegal wear ginger belts to arouse sexual desire in their potential partners?
In addition to its grounding effects, ginger helps you to find more self-confidence and self-assurance. Ginger not only helps your stomach to feel better, but also helps you to “digest” those things that prevent you from living and realizing your dreams, goals and heart’s desires.

The fragrance of Angelica essential oil helps you to open your heart and become aware of your own divinity. Angelica can help you to stay grounded and still absorb the higher vibrations and energies you need to unfold into your higher consciousness. It supports your spirit to be free and to become one with the higher worlds, while at the same time you remain well grounded and connected here with Mother Earth.

Patchouli is one of the most popular essential oils when it comes to grounding yourself, relaxing your mind and bringing clarity to your thoughts. Patchouli can help you to overcome insecurity, obsession and jealousy. Patchouli brings you in contact with Mother Earth, lets you feel and strengthen your roots and gives you the support to live and experience your life more fully.
“Come back to the Now, you will not have any influence on those things from the past and future if you are not completely rooted in the Now. Your life takes place here and now. Not a moment earlier, not a moment later” Patchouli whispers to you.

Cedarwood
Cedarwood connects you, soothes you and grounds you. It is filled with a calm, invincible power, which will also flow through you, if you allow it and anoint yourself with the cedar. Its name “cedar” actually comes from the Arabic word “kedron”, which means “power”.
Cedar grounds you, straightens you up, connects you to your highest self and spreads an aura of protection around you. Especially with North American shamans, the custom is widespread to use the protection of the cedar in order to undertake inner journeys without harm. But not only inner journeys, also the outer life can be quite dangerous. If we feel protected, the heart can open, receive and give divine love and self-acceptance and self-love can enter your life.

Application:
- Apply a drop of cedarwood essential oil to your left hand – rub with your right hand and then put your hands in front of your nose. Take 1-2 minutes to simply smell its fragrance. What do you feel? What can you do with it? Become still and simply listen and feel. Now is one of those moments when you don’t have to judge and evaluate. Just perceive what is. Do you feel the silence and the space opened up by the cedar?
- Take two drops of cedar and rub them on both soles of your feet. Leave your hands on the soles of your feet for another 1-2 minutes and feel how you are connected to Mother Earth. Can you feel them pulsating? Now take your hands to your nose and inhale the fragrance while you place the soles of your feet flat on the ground and imagine how roots grow from the soles of your feet deep into the earth. Your upper body, however, is upright and flexible. Imagine that you are strong, rooted and upright like one of those amazing cedar trees. How does it feel?
- Apply 1-3 drops of cedarwood to your coccyx and rub the entire spine from neck to coccyx. Do you feel what it feels like to be in the here and now? Do you feel warmth or coolness flowing through your spine?
- Treat yourself to a strengthening footbath, or even better, a full bath. Mix a few drops of cedar with bath salts and let yourself go – really take at least 20 minutes. Feel the majesty, peace and strength of the cedar.
- Put 6-7 drops of cedar into your diffuser. How do you feel when “cedarwood is in the air”?
Balsam Fir
Balsam Fir grounds the body and strengthens the mind. By helping you to connect the energy of the sacral chakra with the energy of the heart chakra, it brings emotional stability to your emotions and thoughts. This is a particularly important oil for those of us who are easily emotionally unbalanced. By the way, the essential oils of Palo Santo, cedarwood, frankincense, etc. also bring stability, security and grounding.

Grounding
Grounding is a blend of 7 different essential oils, which ground you, bring you peace and serenity. If you tend to deny your own higher truth or make decisions out of stress and tension that do not serve you in the long run, Grounding is your essential oil blend.
Grounding is a blend of silver fir (Abies concolor), spruce (Picea mariana), ylang ylang (Cananga odorata), pine (Pinus sylvestris), cedar (Cedrus atlantica), angelica (Angelica archangelica) and juniper (Juniperus osteosperma and Juniperus scopulorum).
Grounding is especially stabilizing for an angry spirit, for example when you feel lost, upset or bored.
Grounding whispers to you: “Earth yourself and come back to the now, here you are in full possession of your powers and can master the challenges of your life with clarity and ease”.
Application:
- Apply a drop of Grounding to your left hand – rub it with your right hand and then put your hands over your nose. Take 1-2 minutes and simply smell the fragrance. What does it do to you? If you wish, imagine yourself in the arms of Mother Earth, she nourishes and heals you, calms and relaxes you.
