Schwarzer PfefferEgyptians used Black Pepper in the mummification process – researchers found it in the abdomen and nostrils of Ramses II.

Black pepper essential oil is warming, soothing and supportive of muscles.  Its warm embrace helps those with muscle discomfort especially after a workout or rigorous exercise. It is also energizing to the mind while being comforting to the body.

Mentally its spicy and warm aroma is stimulating and empowering. Black pepper is good for those of us who worry constantly and have great stress. It empowers us to release those negative energies and embrace our own power. It also gives us the physical stamina and courage to overcome the things that are creating the problems to begin with.

Black pepper also helps us “digest” unhealthy feelings towards people especially ourselves. This is especially helpful for those who are too self critical and angry or upset with themselves.

There are over 100 different pepper species in the pepper family. The pepper essential oils should be made from is called Piper nigrum.  The essential oil of pepper is distilled from the Fruit/berries of the plant.

The Name “Black Pepper” comes from a Sanskrit word “pippali” which means “long pepper”.

In the distant past, black pepper was considered sacred and was even used as a form of currency. It was so valuable, that it was traded for gold and was one of the most prized trade items exported from India to the rest of the world.

Did you know that “Pepper” was used in a figurative sense to mean “spirit” or “energy”? Records indicate, that as far back as the 1840s it was used in that sense. Then eventually it was shortened to the word “pep” that we use today”. Indian monks ate several peppercorns every day during their travels. It helped them getting more endurance.

The main components of black pepper essential oil are: Limonene, Pinene, Myrcene, Phellandrene, Beta Caryophyllene, Beta Bisabolene, Sabinene, Linalol, Pinocarveol, Alpha Termineol, Camphene and Alpha Terpenene.

  • Chemistry of essential oils – made simple

Aromatic plants and trees produce essential oils for protection against other plants, herbaceous insects and mammals, to signal other plants and animals (communication), and to attract insects for pollination. Essential oils are natural – not man-made.

When essential oils are properly distilled from aromatic plants they are bioactive and pure. Each essential oil is composed of 100-300 unique molecules – each with its own aroma.

11866296_416485835217822_6279445343266185544_nWhen you smell an essential oil you may describe it with certain characteristic “light notes”, medium notes” and “heavy notes”. These “notes” result from the unique aroma of different molecules.

The “light notes” usually result from 10-carbon molecules called “monoterpenes”. Monoterpenes are volatile molecules that spread quickly in the air, yet their aroma does not last long (e.g., alpha-pinene).

Most tree-derived essential oils, such as Idaho Blue Spruce, Idaho Pondersosa Pine, Tsuga, Pine, and Hinoki have a high concentration of “light note” monoterpenes.

Other oils with a high percentage of high notes are: Bergamot, Tangerine, Orange, Lemon, Petigrain, Melaleuca, Lemongras, Cardamom, Peppermint, Cajeput, Eucalyptus, Myrtle, Pine, Juniper, Rosemary.

    11887900_416789768520762_4413350392985666328_nMedium Notes Aromas

The “medium note” aromas result from oxygenated monoterpenes. These “medium note” molecules tend to be described as “floral, sweet, pleasing, flowery” (e.g., linalool, linalyl acetate, bornyl acetate, decanal).

Plants naturally oxygenate (add oxygen to) monoterpenes to form molecules known as aldehydes, esters, alcohols, ethers, and ketones – all very aromatic molecules.

The “medium note” molecules tend to hang in the air longer and remain on the skin longer. Lavender (linalool), and Wintergreen (methyl salicylate) essential oils have a high abundance of “medium note” molecules.

Other oils with a high percentage of medium notes are: Lavender, Rose, Cypress, Geranium, chamomile, Ginger, Jasmin, Ylang Ylang, Clary Sage, Melissa, Oregano, Majoram, Fennel, Yssop, Sage, Eucalyptus, Myrtle, Pine, Juniper, Thyme, Cypress, Neroli.

11831798_416794428520296_3694161533948617097_nFinally, the “heavy note” molecules are 15-carbon sesquiterpenes, oxygenated sesquiterpenes, and 20-carbon diterpenes. These “heavy notes” are described as: “woody, heavy, musky, lasting” (e.g., copaene, santalene, aromadendrene, germacrene D, bisabolol).

The “heavy note” molecules stay on the skin for hours and days. The “heavy note” molecules are responsible for the lasting aroma (after the “light note” and “medium note” molecules have dissipated).

Essential oils such as Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood and Hong Kuai are composed of high percentages of “heavy notes” molecules.

Other oils with a high percentage of heavy notes are: Cedarwood, Frankincense, Cistus, Patchouli, Angelica, Myrrh, Pepper, Helichrysum, Vetiver, Rosewood.

Essential oil aroma is related to essential oil molecules – your nose detects the molecules.

  • The science behind high quality essential Oils

11885708_416463748553364_3483328166024802456_oGary Young learned GC-MS (gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy) analysis techniques from Dr. Herve Casabianca, who works for CNRS in France.

Dr. Casabianca is well-known in the field of essential oil GC-MS analysis in Europe. Along with Dr. Casabianca, Young Living has two GC-MS instruments, one at the Young Living Ecuador Farm and the other at the Young Living Global Headquarters in the Research & Development labs.

Dr. Richard Carlson and Dr. Cole Woolley operate the GC-MS instrument in Young Living’s Research & Development labs in Lehi, Utah. Dr. Carlson and  Dr. Cole Woolley have PhDs in analytical chemistry in addition to more than 50 years of collective research experience in GC-MS and other analytical instrumentation.

11850641_416463815220024_3719186418982438683_oTesting essential oil samples by GC-MS can be performed by inexperienced technicians and scientists. However, interpretation of GC-MS data is typically reserved for the experienced PhD scientist who is familiar with essential oil molecular components who can interpret the results from the GC-MS instrument. and interpreting GC-MS spectra.

Essential oils are readily analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (GCMS). The GC portion of the instrument separates the 100-300 unique molecules by heat using only a single drop of essential oil.The MS portion of the instrument identifies each molecule by name (e.g., limonene)

The GCMS instrument is used in Young Living Research to verify that our essential oils are genuine single-species, pure, and unadulterated – because of this system no fake, perfume oils laced with synthetic, aroma-enhancing chemicals make it to any Young Living essential oils.

  • Sacred Frankincense flowering

    sacred frankincense flowering
In Oman, blossoming of frankincense flower stocks appear twice each year – once in March and once in September.
Each stock contains 20-30 flowers that successively open, usually only 2 per day. The flowers are white and light yellow when they first open. Then the pollinating insects arrive.

Every frankincense tree has an associated colony of ants that live close by in the ground. Look carefully and you will see the goal of each ant is the pollen from the flowers. Ants climb the trunk, branches, and leaflets to get to the flowers.

Honey bees, flies, beetles and butterflies join the ants for pollen and flower nectar. By sunset of the day a flower opens, the flower is cross-pollinated and the yellow center turns red to signify “don’t bother with me”.

  • First helichrysum has been distilled…

Helichrysum distillationThe time has come – fist helichrysum oil has been deskilled at our new farm in Croatia.

Why would you want to have helichrysum essential oil?
Helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum) is known for its restorative properties and provides excellent support to the skin, liver, and nervous system.
Uses: Helichrysum has been studied by European researchers for regenerating tissue and nerves and improving circulation and skin conditions. Throughout history, it has been used for healing scar tissue from old and recent wounds, and stopping bleeding.

Helichrysum is a small plant, with yellow flowers, which contain their color long after they have been picked – thats why they also got the name “Immortelle” (immortal).Helichrysum-1
